21. Rescue and Attack

CHECA’S BARKED orders washed over Heath as he leaned back, his arms firmly around Checa’s chest, helping him maintain his resistance to Rim’s weight. He didn’t even know if Ardelle was breathing. He had to believe she was because they’d never complete the Warrior Pledge without her. He also needed another treatment of whatever she’d done in the cavern. He’d managed to keep up with everyone else, but he was exhausted. The earthquake happened at about the same time he was contemplating collapsing and begging to be left behind.

Guilt ate at him. What if he had bonded with her in the cave? Apart from making the biggest mistake of his life, the Bond would mean he would be mentally attached to her. He’d be a blithering mess by now, and all over someone who would make a better friend for him than a lover. For probably the billionth time, he wondered why Checa wouldn’t bond with him.

The same answer came to him, just as it did every time. Heath might feel the Bond-Call for Checa, but Checa clearly didn’t feel the same for Heath, regardless of the way he acted when they were together. If Checa didn’t feel it by now, he probably never would. Waiting hadn’t accomplished anything. Heath should abandon all hope and move on. If that was possible.

What was he without Checa? He’d still be a warrior and a Seer. He’d still have family and friends, but he’d never have another lover; there was no one he wanted like he wanted Checa. Making love to anyone else would feel shallow. Hollow. More lonely than being on his own.

“I’ve got this, Heath. Tell me what’s happening down there,” said Checa as he shifted. Heath moved to lie on his stomach to watch Rim rappel down to Ardelle.

Rim slid down the sheer rock while Checa, with the rope looped over his shoulders and around his back, fed line to her. Behind them the rest of their team was providing counterweight, waiting for the chance to haul the two women to the surface.

Heath kept his gaze focused on Ardelle.

“Watch her,” Checa murmured behind him. “If she moves, get her to stop.”

Heath felt a small bubble of annoyance grow. Checa had just told him to watch Rim. Now it was Ardelle. “Just hope Rim knows what she’s doing. If not, I’ll be going over and getting them out.”

Rim oscillated between bewildered innocence and scary-assed competence, and Heath wasn’t sure which one was true. Rim abseiled quickly and expertly down the rock face, and Heath drew his first deep breath since he realized Ardelle was gone.

A rumble, too deep to be felt, too far away to be heard, echoed in the back of Heath’s brain.

Double drett and damn the wings.

“There’s another coming!” he said to Checa.

“When? How bad?” Checa didn’t move; he still held firm to the rope lowering Rim to Ardelle. The rope went slack and he adjusted automatically, pulling it taut, ready to haul the women up.

Heath kept his gaze locked on Rim.
